Park City Area Private School Choices

As COVID-19 reared its ugly head, and city dwellers dreamt of wide open spaces and mountain west escapes, the questions about private school options in the Park City area became a hot topic.

Families from bigger cities were accustomed to a commute to private schools. Driving 30 minutes to a private school 5 miles away was not uncommon.  Luckily, in Park City, a long commute for private school does not have to happen until maybe high school.

I am working with several relocation families right now who are strongly considering private school for a myriad of reasons, such as no need to purchase directly in the Park City School District boundaries, their children are used to private schools already, or the public schools in Park City may not deliver what their children need.

Park City does provide options for private schools from pre-school to high school. Some are right in town, others are bus ride away. All may have just what you are looking for. As for my children, they went to private school. We began our Utah journey as residents of Salt Lake City. My children went to Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s School. Eventually the St. Mark’s portion of the name was dropped. But “Hall” was not dropped. So please don’t call it Rowland.

When our family relocated to Park City from Salt Lake City, my children did not want to leave Rowland Hall, nor did they have to.  We all loved the school and there was a bus system that drove them safely down Parley’s Canyon on HWY 80 for an extra charge. We didn’t think twice about it. By this time, my children were in middle school, so the longer days were not a challenge. For families with young children, those long days can be too much to handle. Thankfully there are options. Please reach out to me if you want the inside scoop on why we loved Rowland Hall so much.

A well respected option for elementary school is Park City Day School, established in 2010 and serves Pre-school – 8th grade. I have friends who have sent their children there and loved it. Park City Day School boasts small class rooms, a nurturing environment and kind, caring teachers. Many graduates head to Rowland Hall from Park City Day School.

Another option for preschool years, Soaring Wings Montessori School  is popular and well loved. Soaring Wings is also located centrally on HWY 224, which is Park Avenue as you get closer into Old Town in Park City.

If these options don’t work for you, there are public schools in the area that have more rigorous academic curriculum. Silver Summit Academy, K-12, in the South Summit school district offers a STEAM program. Park City Public Schools

Weilenmann School of Discovery is a public charter school for K-8 grade. Centrally located between Pinebrook and Summit Park, this newer school has become very popular with families from Summit, Wasatch and Salt Lake counties.

Private school is not for everyone, and neither is public. Choosing the best school right now can be a challenge due to COVID-19. Classes are not in session for direct observation. I can put you in touch with parents of students if you want to get a better feel for the school. Please let me know how I may help you.
